An easy way to change the SharePoint index file’s location

This solution is valid for these scenarios where a full crawl is not a problem. In these cases you can move the index stopping the Office SharePoint Search Service and starting it again. In the form to start it you will find a textbox to indicate the new location of the index file. Then you will need to assign the index server for each SSP and start a full crawl for each content source. Remember that during the processes the search results will be incomplete.

After that I have some questions:

  • How could we change the default index location without reinstalling SharePoint?
  • In the default index location there are some folders with text files. Which is their function? I think they are related with the SQL Search, but I am not sure.

To understand the key concepts of the search infrastructure I have read the chapter 17 (specially the page Choosing a Search Implementation Topology Model) of the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Administrator's Companion.

Hi ALex,

I was wondering if you'd know about any extra steps for moving the indexer and query services. I used to have both of them running on one server and I moved both to another server and did a full crawl which worked fine. The problem is that when I login to my portal and do a search it says that the search request could not contact the search service. I checked my services on the new location and indexer svc, office sharepoint search and wss search were all running. Do I have to change anything on the web frontend servers or the web.config. Any light on this would be very appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Nathalie,
Have you associated the new index server with the SSP that contains the web application?

Hi,

I'm seeing the same thing as Natalie.

Trying to move the office sharepoint search services to a new server and I get the message:

"The search service is currently offline. Visit the Services on Server page in SharePoint Central Administration to verify whether the service is enabled. This might also be because an indexer move is in progress. "

when I check the Search Settings on the SSP.

I have associated the SSP with the new index server.
Any thoughts on the error message?
Thx.

Wait 5 minutes and check it again.

This message always appears during the next 3-4 minutes after a index server has been associated to a SSP.
